The present study aims to explain the origins of political Jāhiliyyah from the perspective of Sayyid Quṭb and to examine the means of overcoming it. Given the central position of the concept of Jāhiliyyah within Sayyid Quṭb’s intellectual framework, an examination of its political dimensions provides a more precise understanding of his views on government, sovereignty, and Islamic society. The principal research question concerns what Sayyid Quṭb identifies as the origin of political Jāhiliyyah and what solution he proposes for overcoming it. More specifically, the study asks whether, in his view, political Jāhiliyyah is confined to the pre-Islamic era or whether it encompasses every political system founded upon non-divine sovereignty. This research employs a descriptive-analytical method based primarily on the intellectual works of Sayyid Quṭb, particularly his Qur'anic exegetical writings. Data were collected from library sources and subsequently analyzed through conceptual and content analysis to examine his views regarding the origins of political Jāhiliyyah and the path toward liberation from it. The findings indicate that Sayyid Quṭb does not restrict Jāhiliyyah to the period preceding the Prophetic Mission (Biʿthah); rather, he regards it as a transhistorical concept. From his perspective, the origin of political Jāhiliyyah lies in human sovereignty over human beings and in legislation based on sources other than the Divine Sharīʿah. Accordingly, any government that derives its legitimacy and legislative authority from a source other than God falls within the realm of Jāhiliyyah, even if it is established in the name of Islam and within a Muslim society. According to Sayyid Quṭb, the path out of political Jāhiliyyah consists of returning to the sovereignty of God, rejecting humanity’s legislative domination over humanity, and establishing an Islamic society and government founded upon the teachings of the Qur'an and the Sunnah of the Prophet. Within this framework, educating a generation of believers who possess a profound awareness of the principles of Tawḥīd constitutes the essential prerequisite for realizing an Islamic political order and transcending political Jāhiliyyah.
