Supervision over the performance of functionaries in all domains, particularly in the political arena which deals with power and the macro-management of the country, is a significant component in preserving and elevating the health of the political system. It is with the health of this system that one can be hopeful for the health of other governance systems of the country. Conventional supervisions are organizational supervisions that, through external mechanisms, supervise the behavior and performance of individuals. Due to the type of governance in the Islamic Republic, which possesses an entirely religious and faith-based (īmānī) nature, methods based on external supervision have not demonstrated the requisite efficacy. The objective of this research is to present an effective and efficient solution to compensate for the aforementioned deficiency, particularly in the context of supervising political functionaries. In order to secure the aforementioned objective, the solution of "self-monitoring" has been envisaged and explicated utilizing an analytical-descriptive method. The principal problem of this research is the examination of the role of self-monitoring in the agency of political functionaries. Self-monitoring, as an ethical component, possesses both a deterrent role and a therapeutic role. The realities of society indicate that the major portion of the existing detriments in the domain of supervision originates from the negligence of the constructive exigencies of Islamic ethical (akhlāq) teachings; the solution to overcome this negligence is the implementation of ethical propositions in all stages of the training, recruitment, and activity of functionaries. Hitherto, such a method has not been utilized as a supervisory program. The mechanism of self-monitoring, which is based on faith-based (īmānī) self-motivational propositions and is a significant component of Islamic ethics, can, provided the realization of environmental and organizational conditions, render functionaries resilient and immune against this detriment; its consequence will be the elevation of the efficacy of the functionaries and the augmentation of the level of satisfaction of both sides, the people and the functionary. With this approach, the current supervisory systems must also be redefined in proportion to the self-monitoring role of the functionaries. In conclusion, if the two aforementioned supervisory wings are appropriately utilized with an overlapping approach, they can fulfill a highly effective role in securing a healthy and vibrant political and social system in the country.
