The word secularism essentially means the separation of religion and state. This means that government institutions should not be influenced by religious organizations and should remain neutral in religious matters. The contradictions between secularism and religion are complex; in multicultural societies, conflicts arise when religious and secular lifestyles collide. In short, the conflict between secularism and religion often stems from the tension between religious and secular values and the role of religion in society. This research, using a descriptive and explanatory approach and documentary and library methods, seeks to examine Jürgen Habermas's view on the role and function of religion in societies. Therefore, the author's concern is what approach does Habermas promote regarding the role of religion and its functions in the modern era? In response to this issue, Habermas has recently increasingly focused on the issue of "religion". Habermas advocates a concept called “post-secular society,” a society in which religious and secular citizens engage in dialogue to create a common framework for cooperation. He emphasizes the importance of "cross-translation," meaning that religious values and concepts must be expressed in a way that is understandable to secular people and vice versa. Unlike secular, post-secular means that the religious dimension is not seen as an obsolete or outdated model. The secularist view assumes that religion still exists at present, but will end at some point. The post-secular perspective assumes that religion should remain influential in the public sphere and public debates and should not be devalued. According to Habermas, secularism requires engagement with religious traditions to maintain legitimacy and social cohesion. Although Habermas is increasingly interested in the philosophy of religion, he does not neglect any of the areas opened up by the theory of reason and communication. Rather, he seeks points of contact within religion to which our degraded normative consciousness can connect and revive itself. Jürgen Habermas considers his thinking to be post-metaphysical. His position should be seen as an analysis of the increasing role and importance of religion in modern, secular society.
