The fact that the structure of power and the prevailing political currents in the country promote certain perspectives and approaches in their affiliated media—both systematically and independently—can, over the long term, influence national security in terms of various indicators. In this regard, the present study, employing a content analysis method, seeks to answer the question: What role and function have media—with an emphasis on electronic publications—played in ensuring national security within the framework of the two streams of fundamentalism and reformism? To address this question, four newspapers affiliated with the two streams were examined based on categories including subject matter, headlines, news, and photographs. The study population comprised newspapers published at regular intervals; two newspapers affiliated with the fundamentalist stream (Farhikhtegan and Keyhan) and two newspapers affiliated with the reformist stream (Donya-ye Eghtesad and Shargh) were selected as the study sample. Given the high volume of content in these newspapers, a random sampling method was applied, and one issue from each month of the winter quarter of 1400 (Iranian calendar) was examined. The results indicate that the dimensions of national security—in the headlines, texts, and images of the aforementioned media in both streams—are not evenly distributed; and although there is a greater emphasis on these dimensions in newspapers affiliated with the reformist stream, in the newspapers of both streams the quality and quantity of the portrayal of national security dimensions have been met with neglect and indifference.
