The discourse of Imam Ali (A.S.) in the letters of Nahj al-Balagha is predominantly political, formulated to persuade the audience and foster acceptance of his ideological and political positions. Imam Ali (A.S.) employed diverse strategies to enhance the credibility of his discourse. Interrogatives constitute one of the most significant tools observed in his political discourse within Nahj al-Balagha, serving to persuade the audience. These interrogatives deviate from their primary function and assume an argumentative role through paralogical reasoning. In this context, the speech acts utilized in Imam Ali’s (A.S.) political discourse play a fundamental role, with their indirect meaning substantially contributing to the credibility of interrogative propositions. Employing a descriptive-analytical method, this study examines the speech acts within interrogatives—as directive acts in His Eminence’s discourse—through the lens of John Searle’s model of speech act theory. The findings indicate that the language in this political discourse does not merely serve a productive function; rather, within the communicative process, it seeks to alter the audience’s approach, provide direction, persuade, and instill acceptance. Furthermore, speech acts manifested through deviated interrogatives primarily emerge as indirect and implicit acts—considering the audience’s context and the discourse’s political structure—which materialize as exposition, warning, reproach, counsel, and negation.
